Outrageous. Reckless. Senseless. That is what many military families are calling the continuing ban on concealed carry for servicemembers on U.S. military bases. Bases like Ft. Hood, where 3 brave members of our military were gunned down by an apparently mentally-compromised Spc. Ivan Lopez.
And the outrage will only grow in light of a new shocking report that Lopez was able to remain free for 15 to 20 minutes more than enough time for him to kill 3 and wound 16 before finally being confronted by a military policewoman, and took his own life.
For contrast, the wholesale slaughter of 26 children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary took just 11 minutes.
And this psycho had 15-20 minutes. On a MILITARY BASE. Let the insanity of that sink in for a minute. And this continues to be our shameful Federal policy 5 years after Muslim jihadist Nidal Hassan gunned down 13 defenseless service members on the same base in 2009.
The shooting began just after 4:00 p.m. local time, and went on for 15 to 20 minutes before Lopez killed himself. Lopez only took his own life after he was confronted by a military policewoman. As Ft. Hood commanding officer Lt. Gen. Mark Milley described it, He was approaching her at about 20 feet. He reached into his jacket. She pulled out her weapon. He put his weapon to his head and shot himself in the head. Milley added that the MPs actions were clearly heroic, what she did at that moment in time…She did exactly what we expect of a United States soldier.
Members of the military have been prevented from carrying weapons on base since at least 1992, George H.W. Bushs Department of Defense implemented a directive stating that it was DoD policy to limit and control the carrying of firearms by DoD military and civilian personnel. This policy was codified by Army Regulation 190-14, under Bill Clinton in 1993.
Incredibly, even after Nidal Hassans massacre in 2009, this disgraceful DoD Directive 5210.56 was reissued in April 2011 by Obamas Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn III.
Military families are outraged at yet another slaughter that could have been prevented.
Its not fair that the military has to fight overseas only to come home and try to survive. They deserve the right to carry like any citizen

An anonymous active duty officer told TRN:
Bases are like schools now, gun-free zones where it is so easy for scum bags to come in and kill people. Theyre essentially sitting ducks.
Gold Star widow and veteran activist Jane Horton said,
Our military members should be able to carry a personal weapon on base at all times.
Rep. Steve Stockman of Texas has introduced H.R. 3199, the Safe Military Bases Act, which repeals the Bush/Clinton-era ban on military personnel carrying weapons on base. Stockman said:
This is the third mass shooting on a military base in five years, and its because our trained soldiers arent allowed to carry defensive weapons, said Stockman. Anti-gun activists have turned our military bases into soft targets for killers.
